EVEN ANIMALS LOVE AVADHOOTHAS

LEELAS OF MY GURU--PART 3
                          OM NAMO GURUDEVA

One day when he was on the road an elephant with
mahuth was going in the opposite direction. The elephant
turned back , came near GURU and started caressing him
all over his body through it's trunk !
On another occasion a monkey climbed on his
shoulders & stayed there for a long time Guru told his
bhaktha's to give it a piece of cloth, then it went away.
Two donkeys used to visit him every day morning,
he used to feed them. Two dogs always used to sit below his
chair. He was looking after nearly 100 cows in his house
        ================================

In RAMANA MAHARSHI's ashram on the hill leaders
of two groups of monkeys used to bring their dispute to
RAMANA for settlement. On one occasion a guest arrived
around noon & wanted to take bath in the pond. A tiger was
approaching the pond at the same time.RAMANA told the
tiger to go back & returnafterwards. The tiger went back.
There was one cow LAKSHMI at Ramanashramam., it
used to love RAMANA & behave like a jnani.

BHAGVAN WITH COW LAKSHMI

It gave birth to a calf on RAMANA's BIRTHDAY for
consecutive THREE YEARS! Is it not a miracle! It was so
lucky to die resting its head on the thighs of RAMANA.
There is a SAMADHI for it at Ramanashramam, along with,
for a crow,a dog,a peacock.
Queen of Rajasthan presented him a white peacock,
RAMANA insisted that it is kept near him, even though
ashramites found it difficult to maintain cleanliness,&
RAMANA is exposed to cold weather.

BHAGWAN WITH WHITE PEACOCK

Squirrels used sit on his lap as if hypnotized & eat nuts.
RAMANA used to say we have to look after animals with
love as MAHATHMA's soul may be in them.
          =================================

SWAMY NITHYANANDA  used to talk to
cobras, tigers when they  used to come to meet him.

What is GOD ??

GOD is FORMLESS,hence normal mind cannot conceptualize it.
GOD can also assume ANY FORM.
GOD is BEYOND ATTRIBUTES
GOD has NO COLOUR
GOD IS ACTIONLESS
Nothing is SPECIAL to GOD
God has no WISHES
GOD is SUPREME BLISS
GOD is ONE WHOLE without any divisions
              -(There is NO SECOND)
GOD is KNOWLEDGE
GOD has NO BEGINNING,MIDDLE & END.
CONSCIOUSNESS is GOD
GOD is REAL(SATHYA)
GOD is AUSPICIOUS & PURE
SOUL(ATHMA) is GOD.
OMKAR is GOD
MAYA is NOT GOD(As MAYA IS NEITHER REAL
OR UNREAL,WHERE AS GOD IS REAL)
MAN WITHOUT MIND is GOD
GOD is NOT ABSOLUTE VOID or NON-EXISTENCE
GOD is ALL PERVADING like space.
GOD is SELF-EFFULGENT not aided by light or darkness.
ATHMA which is GOD is only a WITNESS to the three
                               states (waking,dream &deep sleep)
                               - but is the fourth state of TUREEYA
GOD is ALL INCLUSIVE, SELF-ESTABLISHED &
             SELF-DEPENDENT
GOD is NON MOVING & IMMUTABLE (CHANGELESS)
GOD is not limited by SPACE,TIME & GENUS(variety of
          species)-components of MAYA

We don't know the vastness, boundary of the
sky, universe, just like that nobody knows all the
characteristics of GOD!Our capacity is limited to our
mind & mindless state experiences cannot be explained.
Hence how are we to know all the characteristics of GOD !
Have you heard of any saint who has created-
GALAXIES,STARS,SUNS,PLANETS even as MAYA !!
We have been told, however great a SAINT may
be,as long as he is having a body made of five elements,
he will not have the capacity to create, maintain & destroy
universe !!

CHARACTERISTICS OF BRAHMAN
(FROM UPADESHA SAHASRI OF SHANKARACHARYA)

1. There is no vision in Me as I am without the organ of seeing. How can there be hearing in Me who have no auditive organ? Devoid of the organ of speech, I have no act of speaking in Me. How can there be thinking in Me who have no mind?
2-3. Devoid of the vital force, I have no action (in Me) and devoid of the intellect, I am not a knower. Ever free, ever Pure, changeless, immovable, immortal, imperishable and bodiless, I have no knowledge or ignorance in Me who am of the nature of the Light of Pure Consciousness only.
4. All-pervading like the ether, I have no hunger, thirst, grief, delusion, old age and death as I am without a body (mind and vital force).
5. Devoid of the organ of touch, I have no act of touching; and devoid of the tongue, I have no sensation of taste. I never have knowledge or ignorance as I am of the nature of eternal Consciousness.
6. It is well known that the mental modification which is produced through the instrumentality of the eye and is of the form of the object of vision is always witnessed by the eternal Consciousness of the Self.
7-8. Similarly, other mental modifications in the forms of objects of knowledge produced through the instrumentality of other organs and also those in the forms of memory, attachment etc., which are only within the mind, and those again in dream are witnessed by one different from all of them (i.e. by the Self). The Knowledge, therefore, of the Knower is eternal, pure, infinite and without a second.
9. It is through the indiscrimination between the Self and the modifications of the mind, false adjuncts to the Self, that the Knowledge of the Knower is wrongly conceived by the people to be impure and transitory, and the Self happy or miserable.
10. All men misconceive themselves to be ignorant or pure, accordingly, as they identify themselves with the mental modifications 'I am ignorant' or 'I am pure'. It is for this reason that they continue to be in transmigratory existence.
11. One should always remember the Self to be ever-free, unborn and comprising the interior and exterior as described in the Sruti in which the Self is spoken of as eyeless and so on, if one is an aspirant after liberation.
12. That organs never belong to me is known from the Sruti, 'eyeless' etc. There is again the saying of the Sruti belonging to the Atharva Veda that the Self is 'devoid' of the vital force, devoid of the mind and pure.
13. As I am always devoid of the vial force and the mind and heard of in the Kathopanishad as having no connection with sound etc. I am always changeless.
14. I, therefore, have neither un-restlessness nor a profound concentration which is subject to change.
15. How can I who am pure and mindless have those two? I am without any change and without a mind as I am all-pervading and devoid of a body.
16. So, I who am ever free, ever pure and ever awakened had duties to perform so long as there was Ignorance.
17. How can I have concentration, non-concentration or other actions in Me as all men feel that the acme of their lives is fulfilled when they meditate on me and know Me?
18. I am, therefore, Brahman, the all-comprehensive Principle, ever Pure, ever Awakened and ever Unborn devoid of old age, imperishable and immortal.
19. There is no knower among the beings of the world other than Myself. I am the distributor of the results of their actions and the witness. It is I to whom all beings owe their consciousness. Without qualities and without a second, I am eternal.
20. I am not the three visible elements or the two invisible ones, neither I am both (i.e. their combination, the body). I am devoid of all attributes and the three Gunas. In Me there is neither night nor day nor their picture as I am always of the nature of the light.
21. Just as the ether is subtle, without a second and devoid of all forms so am I the non-dual Brahman devoid even of the ehter.
22. The distinction between the Self in Itself and my Self is one due to superimposition (of different adjuncts on one and the same Self), just as difference (is wrongly conceived to) exist in one and the same ether owing to apertures (in various objects).
23. How can difference, absence of difference, oneness, many-ness, and the qualities of being known and being a knower, the results of actions and also agency and experiencing be attributed to Me who am one only?
24. I have nothing to reject or accept on as much as I am changeless. Always free, pure, awakened and without qualities, I am without a second.
25. One should, with great concentration of mind, always know the Self to be All. One certainly becomes all-knowing and free when one knows Me to be residing in one's own body.
26. He who thus knows the reality of the Self becomes successful in attaining the goal of his life and becomes perfect. He becomes a Knower of Brahman and one with It. One knowing the Self otherwise may be said to commit suicide.
27. This ascertained meaning of the Vedas described briefly by me should be imparted to those who have given up worldly action and have controlled their minds by one whose intellect has been trained (according to the scriptures under a teacher who has known Brahman).
28.Supreme Brahman is free from all bondage, merit and demerit, past and future, and also from cause and effect.
29. Brahman is regarded as the doer of everything though It is a non-doer. It is pure. It runs ahead of those that run, though it does not move at all. It appears to be many though unborn. For It possesses all power by Maya.

AVADHOOTHA SADASHIVA BRAHMENDRA

HE WAS AN AVADHOOTHA IN REAL SENSE-HE WAS NAKED
HE WAS IN DEEP SAMADHI EVEN UPTO ONE YEAR
HE KNEW KHANDA YOGA ie,HE CAN ATTACH CUT LIMBS
BACK TO BODY.
HE HAS WRITTEN BOOKS ON ADHYATHMA,BHAKTHI GEETHA
AFTER HIS GURU TOLD HIM TO TALK LESS,HE OBSERVED
MAUNA THROUGHOUT LIFE.
HE TOOK SAJEEVA SAMADHI IN 1751(1762 ?)--ON 9TH DAY

                          TRUE AVADHOOTHA
                     SADASHIVA BRAHMENDRA
                           .
His Samadhi is at NERUR 15 KMs from KARUR in
Tamilnadu,about 250 KMs.from BENGALURU.It is
a small village on the banks of Kaveri River. We
went there in MAY,2011 during ARADHANA
celebrations.

Sada Shiva Brahmendra married at very young age ,as was
the custom at that time.Next day after marriage there was feast
at M-in-law's house. He was hungry & asked for food.AS many
items were to be prepared for feast there was delay. He felt
remorse & ran away leaving every thing. He became an
Avadhootha in real sense,he was naked & lived by begging.

When his friends told his guru that Sada Shiva Brahmendra
was behaving like mad man, guru told he was not fortunate to
be like that.Meaniing that madness is due to BRHMA JNANA.

He was having super powers which he has demonstrated
sometimes.Even when people physically hurt him, he was calm
& advised them.Body corrections he used to make by his powers.

It is told when he entered SAJIVA SAMADHI,at Nerur,
notional samadhies simultaniosly rose up at Manamadurai &
Karachi. At Manamadurai  to fulfill his promise to a Brahmin & at
Karachi to fulfill his promise to a Muslim devotee.

Athma vidya vilasam is a master piece that Sringeri
swamiji's followed it in real life.
Sri Satchidananda Sivabhinava Nrsimha Bharathi (1879-1912) made a seminal visit to the samadhi of the saint at Nerur. He became an ardent admirer and devotee of Sadashiva Brahmendra in whose praise he composed two poetic works (Sadashivendra Stuthi and Sadashiva
Panchrathna) .He considered Sadashiva Brahmendra his ideal, tried to emulate his principles.
But the one who really emulated Sadashiva
Brahmendra and evolved into an Avadhuta was the 34th Jagadguru Sri Chandrasekhar Bharathi Swami. He studied Atma_vidya_vilasa intensely, imbibed its principles and truly lived according to that in word and deed .
Unmindful of the external world he roamed wildly the hills of Srngeri like a child , an intoxicated , an insane and as one
possessed, singing aloud the verses from  Atma_vidya_vilasa:

CRACKED EGG HATCHED !

Another incident in RAMANA MAHARSHI's life--

A sparrow had built it's nest near the place
where RAMANA used to keep his bath towel. One
day when he was removing the towel it touched the nest
& one egg out of five fell down & cracked ! Ramana was very
unhappy,he thought about mother sparrow's feelings towards
that egg.RAMANA immediately kept a piece of wet cloth on the
crack & intently gazed at the egg.Every day he would remove
the egg from the nest & gaze at it ! This went on for about a
week.Lo! the crack vanished ! In due course that egg hatched
along with others !

No logic or scientific theory can be applied to spiritual
field ! We will touch on this subject sometime in future postings.

How GOD comes to the rescue of SAINTS !

In this context two incidents in RAMANA MAHARSHI'S life is mysterious & interesting !!

When RAMANA was staying on the hill in Skandashram,
secretary of Sringeri Mutt came to meet him & told him that
Ramana must come with him for taking DIKSHA from Sringeri
Swamiji. He repeatedly pressed RAMANA that it is very
important for him.RAMANA told him he is not inclined to take
DIKSHA.The secretary left saying he will return back so that
RAMANA can make up his mind.
Earlier in the day one old Brahmin came to ashram &
told RAMANA that he came by train that morning. He went to
take bath leaving his hand bag on the steps. After secretary
left,Ramana casually put his hand into the bag & saw
ARUNACHALA PURANA book. He opened the book at
random,in that very page he found a sloka saying, who ever
lives within a radius of 25 Miles from ARUNACHALA HILL
will get SAUJYA (MOKSHA).
As soon as the secretary returned, RAMANA showed
him the sloka & told him he need not take DIKSHA as he is
staying on ARUNACHALA HILL itself !The secretary left
disappointed. The old Brahmin never returned to collect his
hand bag!! Implying Arunachaleswara himself came in the
guise of old Brahmin !
                        ============================

Ramana's MOTHER got MOKSHA through RAMANA
& her SAMADHI was built at the ground level, down the hill. No
dead body is supposed to be cremated on the hill,as
ARUNACHALA HILL is supposed to be SHIVA himself.
Ramana decided to stay near the MOTHER's SAMADHI &
an ashram was built near the SAMADHI.Food used to be
prepared for all the residents, visitors of ashram.
One day cook of the ashram told RAMANA that
tomorrow breakfast cannot be prepared, as rations are
exhausted.RAMANA told, then all of us will have to remaln
upavas tomorrow. That day night at 1AM a cart full of rations
arrived & cart man knocked the door, unloaded the items
then left. To this day nobody knows who sent the rations !!

AVADUTHA VENKATACHALA

OF SAKARAYAPATTANA

One G.K.Bhat determined to meet my GURU one day &
started on his motorbike. He had come to know that
GURU is in Bangalore.GURU was not liking publicity, hence bhakthas werewere not divulging hiswhereabouts.
First he went to a sweet shop at  Basaweshwar
Nagar & inquired. The owner stood up on hearing
his name.Owner told he had met him for some problem
& everythinghappened as GURU told him!He suggested to
go to GURU's sister's place in RAJAJINAGAR.Bhat went
there, they told he left just then & that may be he has gone
to one Ranganayaki'splace in J P Nagar.Bhat went to that
house & asked for GURU.She told he is taking rest in
bedroom. She served Bhat Shavige,Rasayana which was
Bhat's favorite dish.After about 45 mts.Bhat told her Guru
has not comeout. She went to bedroom but she could not
find him there & told this to Bhat.Bhat got furious as he
didn't believe this,he told her he left house at 9 AM & now
it is 2PM.She didn't know what to do,hence she fell to his
feet. Then BHAT believed her & again went to sister's
place. As soon as Guru saw Bhat,he told smilingly ,"you
found me at last".Then Guru arranged for food for all
those who were present there !!
I heard there are instances when he was present at
two places at the same time !!
