Subhashitas and 0ther Quotes



द्राक्षा म्लानमुखी जाता शर्करा चाश्मतां गता

सुभाषितरसं दृष्ट्वा सुधा भीता दिवं गता



Looking at the flavor of subhashitas (good Sanskrit quotes),

 grape turned pale, sugar turned into crystals and amrita 
[elixir of life] ran away to heaven.

Ishopanishad Verse :

ईशावास्यमिदं सर्वं = ee-shaa-waas-ya-mi-dam sar-wam
यत्किञ्च जगत्यां जगत्। = yat-kin-cha ja-gat-yaam ja-gat

तेन त्यक्तेन भुञ्जीथा: = ten tyak-ten bhun-jee-thaah

मा गृध: कस्यस्विद्धनम्।। = maa gridhah kas-ya-swid-dha-nam



All this here, is permeated by Brahman [The Supreme Soul],
whatever there is in this world.
Enjoy things by renunciation.
Do not covet others' wealth.

Shreemad Bhagwad Gita, Chapter 2, Verse 47

कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन।

मा कर्मफलहेतुर्भूर्मा ते संगोऽस्त्वकर्मणि॥



Your right is to the duty only, not to the fruits thereof.
Do not act for the results of your deeds. Never be attached to 

not doing the duty.

गते शोको न कर्तव्यो भविष्यं नैव चिंतयेत्।

वर्तमानेन कालेन वर्तयंति विचक्षणाः॥


One should not regret the past. One should not worry about 

the future.
Wise men act by the present time.

-B R I H A D A R A N Y A K A  UPANISHAD (4, 4.5)

काममय एवायं पुरुष इति।
स यथाकामो भवति तत्क्रतुर्भवति।
यत्क्रतुर्भवति तत्कर्म कुरुते।
यत्कर्म कुरुते तदभिसंपद्यते॥

kāmamaya evāyaṃ puruṣa iti |
sa yathākāmo bhavati tatkratur bhavati |
yatkratur bhavati tat karma kurute |
yat karma kurute tad abhisaṃpadyate ||


You are what your deep, driving desire is
As your desire is, so is your will
As your will is, so is your deed
As your deed is, so is your destiny

परिभ्रमसि किं व्यर्थं क्वचन चित्त विश्राम्यतां

स्वयं भवति यद्यथा तत्तथा नान्यथा।

अतीतमपि न स्मरन्नपि च भाव्यसङ्कल्पय-

न्नतर्कितगमनाननुभवस्व भोगानिह॥



Why do you wander, 'O' mind, rest somewhere. The natural 

course of thing to happen cannot be altered. It is bound to 
happen. Therefore enjoy the pleasures, whose arrival and 
departure cannot be ascertained, without remembering the 
past and without expecting the future.

अतिदानाद्बलिर्बद्धो ह्यतिमानात् सुयोधन:।

विनष्टो रावणो लौल्यादति सर्वत्र वर्जयेत्।



(The demon king) Bali was vanquished due to his 

excessive charitable nature.King Duryodhana was 
humbled for his excessive pride.(Demon Emperor) 
Ravana was destroyed due to excessive womanising.
Hence one should shun excessiveness in all things.

पृथिव्यां त्रीणि रत्नानि जलमन्नं सुभाषितम् |

मूढै: पाषाणखण्डेषु रत्नसंज्ञा प्रदीयते ||


There are three jewels on earth: water, food, and adages.

Fools, however, regard pieces of rocks as jewels.

यदि सत्संगनिरतो भविष्यसि भविष्यसि ।
तथाऽसज्जनगोष्ठीषु पतिष्यसि पतिष्यसि ॥

yadi satsanga nirato bhaviShyasi bhaviShyasi ।
tathA asajjana goShThIShu patiShyasi patiShyasi ॥

If you always stay in the company of virtuous people, you 
will live and prosper. If you fall into bad company, you will 
definitely fall.

यदीच्छसि वशीकर्तुं जगदेकेन कर्मणा ।
परापवादसस्येभ्यो गां चरन्तीं निवारय ॥

para apavAda sasyebhyo gAm charantIm nivAraya ॥

If you intend to conquer the entire world with one action, that
action should be to control the cow that is tempted to eat 
the grass of slander. Control your mind for giving in to the
temptation to talk ill about others.

मांत्रिकास्तु भविष्यामो योगिनो यतयोपि वा ॥

yadi na kvApi vidyAyaam sarvathA kramate matiH ।
mAntrikAstu bhaviShyAmo yogino yatayo api vA ॥

We could not learn any of the education streams since we 

could not understand them. But we will show off as the most 

knowledgeable people – magicians, saints or religious 

heads. That is when you know that you are living in the

epoch of Kali (present times).

विद्या विवादाय धनं मदाय शक्ति: परेषां परिपीडनाय |
खलस्य साधोर्विपरीतमेतज्ज्ञानाय दानाय च रक्षणाय ||

A bad person uses his knowledge for (empty) 

argumentations, his wealth for egotistic actions,

and his power for harming others. The opposite is true 

concerning a good person: He uses his knowledge, wealth,

and power for providing to others knowledge, financial help,

अष्टादशपुराणानां सारं व्यासेन कीर्तितम् |
परोपकार: पुण्याय पापाय परपीडनम् ||

In all the 18 'Puranas' Shri. Vyaasa Maharshi has told only 

two gospels: Doing favour to others is 'Punya' and troubling

others is 'Paapa' (Sin)!!

विविक्तशरणः शांतो मैत्रः करुण आत्मवान् ॥

yadRucChayaH upalabdhena santuShTo mitabuk muniH ।

He is considered to have known his self if he can – be 
satisfied by windfall that happens once in a while 
(not greedy), eats less, lives a life of a hermit, likes to live 
by himself, peaceful, greets everyone friendly and shows 
compassion towards everyone.

One must never forget the pains that parents take to bring

 us to this world. One can not repay the debt even by 

working for a hundred years.

Destruction comes fast at you when you go against the 
Gods, the vedas, cows, scholars, virtuous people,
Dharma and the Supreme Being.

मातृवत् परदारांश्च परद्रव्याणि लोष्टवत् ।
आत्मवत् सर्वभूतानि यः पश्यति स पश्यति ॥
- समयोचितपद्यमालिका
mAtRuvat paradArAmshcha paradravyANi loShTavat ।
Atmavat sarvabhUtAni yaH pashyati sa pashyati ॥
- samayochitapdyamAlikA
The right way to look at other people’s wives is as if she is 
your mother, other people’s wealth as if it is lump of mud,
all other beings as if they were you.

सन्तोषः परमो लाभः सत्सङ्गः परमा गतिः ।

विचारः परमं ज्ञानं शमो हि परमं सुखम् ॥



Contentment is the highest gain, 

Good Company the highest course, 
Enquiry the highest wisdom, 
and Peace the highest enjoyment.

यावद्वित्तोपार्जनशक्तस्तावन्निजपरिवारो रक्त:।

पश्चाज्जीवति जर्जरदेहे वार्तां कोऽपि न पृच्छति गेहे।।



"Till the moment you are fit to earn money, your family is in 
love with you. Later when you are feeble and weak, no one 
enquires even your wellbeing. What a revelation!!!!
What do our Old-age homes tell us? Just think it over.

न चोरहार्यं न च राजहार्यं न भ्रातृभ्राज्यं न च भारकारि।

व्यये कृते वर्धत एव नित्यं विद्याधनं सर्वधनप्रधानम्॥



It cannot be stolen by a thief.
It cannot taken away by a King.
It cannot be divided among brothers.
It does not cause load. It always increses when spent.
The wealth of knowledge is the greatest of all wealths.

भोगाय पामराणां योगाय विवेकिनां शरीरमिदम् ।
भोगाय च योगाय च न कल्पते दुर्विदग्धानाम् ॥
- अप्पय्यदीक्षितस्य वैराग्य शतक
bhogAya pAmarANAm yogAya vivekinAm sharIramidam ।
bhogAya cha yogAya cha na kalpate durvidagdhAnAm ॥

Commoners believe that body is a means for enjoyment 
(getting their wishes satisfied). Wise men believe that the 
body is a means to attain salvation. For people who have 
lost their mind, the body is of no use.

Kabir who seeing a woman grinding corn said to his Guru, Nipathiranjana, "I am weeping because I feel the agony of being crushed in this wheel of wordly existence like the corn in the hand-mill." Nipathiranjana replied, "Do not be afraid; hold fast to the handle of knowledge of this mill, as I do, and do not wander far away from the same but turn inward to the Centre, and you are sure to be saved."
