GURUVANI--6

"HARE RAAMA"

Sri Sri Raghaveshwara Bharati Swamiji

Sound is a better medium to reach God than reflecting on His
form.

God's form as conceived by us can be faulty. For example, the
picture of a God portrayed in a calendar or book may reflect
the features of a person who has influenced the thought and
mind of the artist. Often ,there could be an unconscious
resemblance between the face of the artist and the divinity
portrayed. But there is no scope for such distortions when
the devotee chooses the path of naamasmarane to reach God.

When we chant God's name with intense devotion and right
pronunciation, it brings the form and presence of God within
us.

GURUVANI--5

The story of the king and four wives illustrates this truth.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

A king had four wives .He loved the fourth wife most and took great care of her. Next, he cast his affection on the third and the second wives respectively. But he completely neglected the first wife who loved him immensely. After a few years, the king fell sick and was on his death bed. He felt miserable to leave behind his kingdom, wealth, family and friends. He summoned his fourth wife and asked:

"I have loved you the most and given you whatever you wanted, now I am dying, will you come with me?"

She said, "No way," and walked off. This broke the heart of the king.

The sad king called his second wife and asked her to go with him.
She said, "Lord, I shall come with you till the cremation ground and then have to bid you goodbye."

Acutely disappointed, the dying king turned to his third wife and said, “I have loved you all my life, will you come with me?” She replied, "Not at all, this life is enjoyable, I am going to remarry after you die.”

At this juncture, the king heard the feeble voice of his first wife whom he had neglected all his life. She said, "husband, even if you don't call me, where ever you go, I will accompany you till eternity.”

That was the voice of his soul. The king regretted that in pursuit of power and pleasures he had neglected his true and constant companion and failed to nourish her.

The fourth wife in this story represents our body. No matter how much time and effort we lavish on it, it will desert us when we die.

The third wife is our possessions, status and wealth. When we die, we cannot take any of it with us. They will be enjoyed by others.

The second wife is our family and friends. No matter how much they love us, the farthest they can stay by us is till the grave.

The first wife is our soul; often neglected in pursuit of wealth, power and worldly pleasures. But it is only our soul that will follow us wherever we go. We must nourish, strengthen and cherish it, because it is the only kshema or permanent companion.

GURUVANI--4

Upavasa and nirahara are ways which the saints follow to attain
 God and liberation.

We have to observe the subtle difference between these two
terms.

Upavasa is a spiritual state a person reaches when he forgets

food and other physical needs.

Nirahara is to consciously negate or refuse food for body and

mind.

It helps in reducing the body and mind consciousness and
propels us towards God and Self realisation.

GURUVANI--3

Like Adi Shankara, we need to invite Shiva into our minds:

"Oh ancient hunter, destroy my wicked thoughts which roam

like wild animals in my mind."

When Shiva begins to rule our minds, sinful thoughts and

ignorance are burnt to ashes and the soul is illumined.

Let us surrender our senses, mind and soul at His feet, then

Shiva will become ours- Sarvam Shivamayam - is the true

spirit of Shivarathri.

MEDITATION IS REST FOR MIND & SUCH A MIND GAINS
EXTRAORDINARY POWER !!

GURUVANI --1

From birth to death, the mind works nonstop. Even during
sleep the mind does not rest.

It is awake in the sub conscious level and instructs several
organs of the body to work.
Activities such as digestion, breathing, blood circulation and
dreaming happen under the mind's influence as we sleep.

It is only during meditation that the mind can truly rest.
This rest or silence recharges the mind and invests it with
power.

Such a person's word, body and mind gain extraordinary
strength.

Spiritual leaders like Adi Shankara and Vivekananda are
manifestations of such power.
