Sri Ramana Maharshi accepted the validity of the laws of Karma but said that they were only applicable as long as a person imagined that he was separate from the Self. At this level (the level of the ajnani or the ignorant), he said that individuals will pass through a series of pre-ordained activities and experiences, all of which are the consequences of previous acts and thoughts. He occasionally even said that every act and experience in a person’s life is determined at birth and that the only freedom one has is to realise that there is no one acting and no one experiencing. However, once one realises the Self there is no one left to experience the consequences of actions and so the whole structure of Karmic laws then becomes redundant.
Sri Ramana regarded the law of Karma as a manifestation of God’s will. He said that prior to Self-realisation there is a personal God, Iswara, who controls each person’s destiny. It is Iswara who has ordained that everyone must suffer the consequences of his actions and it is Iswara who selects the sequences of activities that each person must undergo in each lifetime. One cannot escape from Iswara’s jurisdiction while one still identifies with the activities of the body. The only way to become free of his authority is to transcend Karma completely by realising the Self.

Sri Ramana Maharshi: Yes. If the agent, upon whom the Karma depends, namely the ego, which has come into existence between the body and the Self, merges in its source and loses its form, how can the Karma, which depends upon it, survive? When there is no ‘I’ there is no Karma.

Shanmukha told Parameshwara --
Shanmukha with folded hands prayed Hara, Swami ! Now
my mind has been divided into two parts - first when you
explained path of aversion(virati),dispassion, my mind left
all thoughts & merged in itself. Afterwards on hearing path
of Sathkarma, it started liking that to follow, therefore there
is no peace of mind. In these two, which is better, which
one I shall achieve, please explain.
Parameshwara told Shanmuka--
My Child ! by both paths liberation can be achieved.
However, path of aversion(virati) 'Arudha Path' is best,
path of Sathkarma which is 'Arurukshu Path' is not as
good(madhyama). Achieving Arudha Path is very
difficult, you achieve this path only. If you are able to renounce family life which is the key, you can achieve
Arudha Path,
Arurukshu needs to do actions(karmas), this yogi carries
out all actions with spiritual mind & surrenders fruit of
action to God. Liberation(Moksha) is achieved only if you
renounce samsara(family), with family you cannot achieve
it. You renounce family, this means you renounce woman.
If you leave woman, it is as good as leaving family. I tell
this to you on oath(shapatha). Actions carried out without
wife is Nishkama Karma(action without motive, not result
oriented), actions carried out with wife are Kamya
Karmas(with motive & result oriented).
These Nishkamana Karmas, Sakamana Karmas, when
offered to Brahman they become Sathkarmas(good
actions). Whatever karma it may be, It is best to leave
them. Those who are liberated say to leave karmas &
praise Nirguna( without) attributes.
Nishkamana(without desire) Karma, with woman karma,
offered to Brahman karma -- these three types of karmas
bring unhappiness. Therefore path of karma itself is not
suitable, we feel.When Yoga becomes stronger, it is
better to renounce karma. If Yoga has not become
stronger, leaving karma is not good. In any time frame
renouncing karma brings peace & happiness.
Those who know Garuda(eagle) Mantra, they handle
cobra without fear, those who do not know that mantra
can they play with cobra ?, same way interest in family
also. If poison is mixed to five types of tasty rice
preparations can we eat them ?, same way even after
knowing family is Brahman only, still this is full of
unhappiness.
If you play with scorpion because it looks beautiful will
it not bite you ?, a horse looks good but is having bad
vortex like hair,will you buy it ?, house is good but owl
has entered the house, can we live in that house ?,
honey is very sweet, but if it is applied to the tip of
arrow can we taste it ? same way even if you are a great
Brahma jnani, you should not be interested in family.
This family is bad for Brahma jnana, against progress
of yoga-dhyana & is death to experience happiness.
A person living with family may look like living happily
but still there will be some source of worry without
peace. even if he is without vasanas, some vasana will
remain, if he thinks he is doing nishkamana karma, he
will do kamana karma at least in dream, because even
sathkarma is associated with unhappiness.
Even when both feet have been chained, additionally
just like cuffing the neck also, along with excessive
karmas, if matters connected with women are also
involved, this sathkarma,will it be be of high standard ?
If monkey is fed with hot drinks, can we train that
monkey to follow instructions ! If a mad man is made
to eat pills, will his madness go away ? same way by
karmas, will Yoga yield results ? Being fully involved
in karma transactions,if you say "I shall achieve Yoga"
will you be able to retain your concentration, just as
you cannot avoid hit on your head by powdering
hammer, if you place your head on the base.
If you are living with family & do worship of Brahman
will your mind become pure ? just as coiled cobra round
the neck will definitely bite you.It is not surprising if a
blind person falls into a dirty pond,but it won't look good
if a person with eyes falls into a dirty pond, same way,
a person with knowledge, living with family is not good.
Five elements related to five senses cause death of five
animals getting involved in senses as follows --
1) EARTH - Bumble bee dies for SMELL
2) WATER - Fish dies for TASTE
3) FIRE - Moth dies for SIGHT
4) AIR - Elephant dies for TOUCH
5) AKASHA - Deer dies for SOUND(Jnana Sindhu
mentions Cobra dies for SOUND)
When above animals die by only one sense, human
beings having all the five senses, will they not harm
them ? reason being, there is no similarity between
Yoga & Sathkarma.
A family person doing Sathkarma, even though not
interested in family just like, lotus leaf in water,
reflection of sun in water, kumbara worm in mud,
gajaga in ash, matter of family is full of sorrow &
unhappiness.
If you say we all have to live like king Janaka, others
are not having capacity like him.One day all sages
joined together & asked king Janaka," Oh! King,
please show us how you give attention to family ?"
King Janaka agreed & called a person, got his head
shaved,placed a container on his head,filled it full
with water and told him that he has to walk on the
main roads & return, without a drop of water spilling
out.Janaka also told him, If water spills out his head
will be cut off & sent some soldiers behind him to
watch.That person went round the city as per king's
order & returned.Then king Janaka asked him, where
his attention was while rounding the city, that person
repled "on water".Then Janaka addressed the sages
& told them that, that person's attention was on water
all the time while rounding the city,same way he lives
with his family, keeping his attention on Brahman all
the time ! The sages became happy & returned to their
places.This state cannot be achieved by ordinary people,
even if they achieve it is full of fear. By Sathkarma Yoga
mainly worries of the mind won't stop, therefore path of
aversion(virati) & dispassion(vairagya) is better.
To go to the city of Moksha, there are two paths called
'Virati' & 'Sathkarma'.There is no problem in the path of
Virati,but in Sathkarma path thieves called wife,children
join & rob Yogi of valuables called knowledge.Yogi who
is bold, will not get caught by these thieves,reason being
this Sathkarma path is fearsome whereas path of Virati
is safe & you need not fear anybody.
Without being serious simply if you recite"Brahmasmi"
are you able to overcome Maya ? On reciting by mouth
if you experience that state, you really escape from
Maya.
For Sathkarma 10 weightage points, for actions with
desire(kamyakarma) weightage points are 8, for Virati
weightage points are 12, for aversion & dispassion
telling "Brahmasmi" is the seal. Path of Virati is best,
path of Sathkarma is full of confusion, therefore you
achieve dispassion(Virakti) & succeed in this path.
Renouncing karma is good, if you are not able to
renounce karma at least renounce woman. Through
woman all meaningless things happen. Follow
celibacy(brahmacharya) become Paramahamsa &
climb the path of Arudha.
This should not be told to bad people, dullards,those
who blame others, people full of lust, said Shankara.
Karthkeya on hearing this experienced bliss & started
praying lotus feet of Shankara.
